California-based Forest Sun, raised by back-to-the-lander hippies who were deeply involved in art and music, channels healing through song. His latest album Brighter Day, centers around the death of his father and then end of his ten-year marriage. Forest believes in the power of music and songwriting, in fact, it seems as though the songs demand to come out for him in this non-negotiable urge. During this interview, Forest tells some epic family stories, but also gives a lot of insight into his family of origin and in turn, giving us an idea of how he became the person he is.
Forest and I met back in the early 2000’s and probably hadn’t seen each other in 15 years. We ran into each other earlier this year at Folk Alliance, a huge folk music conference. The way we so easily picked up as if no time had gone by reminded me of his strong ability to connect with other people. I was surprised to hear that connecting is a struggle for Forest and is something he has to intentionally work on. Regardless, I really enjoyed talking to Forest and hearing about his early life, his thoughts on his name and also his morning routine. Forest is an inspiration to keep looking for the light in dark times.
